The pirates of the world have fired another salvo in their ongoing war with copy protection schemes with the first release of the first full-resolution rip of an HD DVD movie on BitTorrent. The movie, Serenity, was made available as a .EVO file and is playable on most DVD playback software packages such as PowerDVD. The file was encoded in MPEG-4 VC-1 and the resulting file size was a hefty 19.6 GB.

As the movie industry tries to encrpyt their content, the more hackers and crackers want to make it freely avalable. Think of it from the point of view of the ordinary user. In the days of the casette tape, when I bought a really good one, I usually copied it onto another one and then kept the original and played the copy over and over. That way, I keep the original in pristine condition and the same could be said for the CDs. MP3s were another thing, but I’d still keep several copies of the files.

The speed and capabilities of both the internet and the ordinary home PC have skyrocketed in the pst few years. So much that any hobbyist could rip off a movie and create a mix of clips. Note the number of active uploaders on youtube, coupled with the proliferation of camera phones. A copy doesn’t have to be that good, as long as it produces the same thing. For movies, we watch it once, for MP3s and music, we just need a decent copy to play on our PCs or players.
