House Arrest
February 22nd, 2007Just Up, Learning, Life, Musings.
I recently spent 2 days under house arrest because of a foot blister. Ouchies! It was caused by a pair of shoes that I rarely wear. It really is a good idea to invest in a good pair of shoes.
While I was at home, I got to clean up my room (partially). I found that I had about 30~50 blank CDs, about 60~80 blank DVDs and I also got to sort out my DVD collection by genre — just anime, documentaries, and movies. The weird thing is that I also got to experience how it would be to be partially handicapped and this was just for two days — I knew that the wound would heal by the end of the week. It was hard enough moving around while limping on one foot for two days, how about for the rest of your life?
Anyway, I also wondered how it would be to be under real house arrest. If you we’re like Richie Rich, you’d probabaly not mind it, but I live in a condo(flat). The space is relatively bigger than the current standards of 40-50 sqm for a 1 room unit and 60-80 for a 2 bedroom. (I’ll write more on this idea of reduced living spaces — soon.) I thought of Aung San Suu Kyi who has been under house arrest for more than 5 years. Imagine staying and moving just around your house for an indefinite amount of time. If you had a garden that might help. If you weren’t used to malling and going shopping, it wouldn’t be much of a bother, but today we are so used to freedom that we forget how it is to be limited in one way or another. We take for granted the skills that we have, the 5 senses we use, and the ability to go about our daily tasks without so much as a second thought.
