US (daw) ?!?

I attended the awards ceremony over at UP Diliman for University Scholars. Funny, I never knew about such a thing until I got awarded myself. So, I asked my mentor and friend, who also teaches there, if being awarded such a thing also meant that my tuition would be free. She said it was just a formality and a Certificate of Merit would be awarded. What the … ? So what was the award for? BTW, Congratulations to the other 1000+ awardees.
Apparently, its for high grades. Who, what, when? Me, of all people? I was an ordinary student during undergrad - ordinary, meaning average grades. I get around a few line of 1s and a smattering of line of 2s and such. The grades that were in the 1s were for my major courses in IT, PE, arts, foreign language (shame on me if those weren’t 1s) and AIS (I’ll write about this a bit more). Considering the workload that we had during undergrad, it was amazing that we somehow managed to stay alive. IIRC, I had 28.5 units, including PE and foreign language, for my freshman undergrad year. That left little time for movies and other recreation types, but I still managed to squeeze in time for RPGs, simulations, and strategy games.
Does that mean that a liberal arts background does indeed help in the future? It might mean that a good foundation in these humanities subjects do help in making us more rounded individuals. (This sounds like one of my undergrad papers.) It helps us think of the bigger picture of what could happen, of what can be done, or even selecting the best from several alternatives.
