X-Com: Terror from the DeepI was looking for some worthwhile games to install on my PC and remembered an old game which I used to run on my Compaq Presario. This was one of those games I used to lose sleep over. It still is one of the best in terms of suspense and strategy. I first got a copy of this game on four 3.5 floppy disks, it was 1995 or 1996 then and my computer did not have a sound card nor did it have a CD-ROM, but this game still rocked! In the early 90’s, there weren’t many PCs that were fast enough to run real time strategy games, like the ones were used to today, so developers had to make do with turn-based and they came up with great one. Another fun aspect of this game is that you can rename your characters, so you can literally play with friends and family members.

There are two parts to this game, one is micromanagement of bases and the other is combat missions. For the aspiring business managers out there, there isn’t much of challenge here, but it is a bit difficult to allocate funds to different operational functions. You have to pay for staff, but I can’t remember now if it was monthly or just a purchase price. The realistic part of it was that some equipment could only be manufactured only in the bases and that they consumed a fixed amount of time and resources.

You can download a copy from the Home of the Underdogs. I tried this copy and I couldn’t finish the game. It seems to hang at the start of the final mission. I’ll install this game again after I finish Tradewinds Legends.
