I had always thought that non-tropical countries would not hit the 30-degrees Celcius mark, but it the news today just mentioned that a heat wave just hit Europe. We are used to a mean temperature of 20-33 depending on the time of the year. We are, after all, a tropical country—hotter, more humid, and more mosquitos.

At night, when the temperature reaches 30, I am tempted to run the aircon for at least 2 hours to stave off the heat until I’m asleep. I used to run it as soon as I finish dinner and then turn it off when I awake. A waste of electricity, we noticed, and it also left us shivering in the morning. A few of my friends also practice the same thing, turn on the timer for a few hours just to cool the room and then have it switch off at around midnight. Ideally, the coldness should last until the morning.

A few years or even last year, it worked that way, but now, even as the supposed ‘rainy season’ is here, it still feels like summer and so we wake up, soaked in sweat, in the middle of the night because of the heat. Argh… On the other hand, it still better than not waking up as the news mentions—some, or rather, many elderly people die of the heat.

It used to reach the 30s only during the day, even more so during lunch, but it rarely reached 28 during night. I only know that when it hits 30 and its night, it going to be a warm night. I hope the rains come soon! What’s the hottest temperature you’ve felt?
