I was reading a Japanese comic the other day. One character there was a plastic surgeon that could change people’s fate depending on the face they choose. Note that this is a sci-fi and partly comedic comic (Now, wasn’t that redundant!). A girl who went into the shop was suggested a brow lift to change her ‘fate.’ Lo and behold, it really did, even if it was short lived. Then I come across this New York City Brow Lift. Lol! I thought it was something made up based on the nature of the comic writer. I had known that some comics involves a lot of research, like those that involve facts and places and those the are in the mystery/crime genre, but it is the first time such a reference to plastic surgery has come up. I encounter a lot of historical and even medical references.
They do say that reading comics is one of the best choices when learning a new language. You’d learn a lot while reading them and they are a lot more interesting than any of those language books I’ve encountered. Even the audio book for languages is no different. There’s one monotonous voice teaching the pronunciation.
I used to do some translations for comics in Chinese to English as a hobby, but it took a lot of time (well, this probably just applies to me) to get the correct translation out because of the differences in how we call things and how we structure our sentences. I still have some comics I’d like to translate into English and I’d probably need help to finish them, but that is a story for another post.
